European Microscopy Congress 2024

Copenhagen, Denmark, August 25 – 30, 2024

Following the postponement of an in-person EMC2020 due to the pandemic we have the pleasure to announce that EMC2024 will be held from Sunday 25th August to Friday 30th August 2024 in Copenhagen.

EMC2024 is the 17th of its kind and will bring the world of scientific imaging together in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities – Copenhagen, Denmark.

Incorporating a balanced conference program of light and electron microscopy in both physical and life sciences – microscopists, manufacturers, and suppliers will come together to share new techniques, applications, and technology.

The EMC2024 will take place at Bella Center, Center Boulevard 5, 2300 Copenhagen, and features pre-congress workshops on Sunday 25th August and an opening reception. Monday the 26th, Eva Olsson will give the opening address followed by the first plenary. The day will continue with 6 parallel sessions and will close with drinks in the Poster and Exhibition area. The last day of the Congress will conclude with a farewell reception.

The exhibition is one the largest of its kind featuring more than 100 exhibitors and a Nordic Corner for smaller enterprises, start-ups and organizations. Please visit our website for more information on opportunities for exhibiting and sponsoring.

All details concerning registration, abstract submission, and deadlines can be found on the website www.emc2024.eu. Registration for the congress and abstract submission are open and there are still stands available for purchase.

Conference Topics

The congress will among other address a range of microscopy related subjects, including dynamic interactions in cells, organoids, tissue, and entire organisms, pathology, immunocytochemistry, and biomolecular labelling, volume electron microscopy in Life Sciences, semiconductors, heterostructures, and devices, quantum materials, advances in 3-dimensional image reconstruction, and new Instrumentation.

NVvM DA/DM Hackathon/Workshop Cloud and Cluster-Based Computing

Dear all,

You are invited to take part in the upcoming series of hackathons organized by the Data Analysis and Data Management (DA/DM) workgroup of the Dutch Society for Microscopy (NVvM). These hackathons offer a practical opportunity to engage with advanced topics in microscopy and image analysis while collaborating with peers. We will sit down for a complete day with a small group (~10 people) and dive deep into the matter, focusing on discussing and improving analysis pipelines, coding, implementation, etc.

Here’s a closer look at the upcoming Hackathons, along with key details about each session:

Cloud and Cluster-Based Computing

  • Date: June 12th
  • Organizing Committee: Torec Luik
  • Location: Amsterdam UMC (AMC)
  • Description: This session will explore the practical application of cloud and cluster-based computing solutions for large-scale microscopy data analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to work with BIOMERO, a versatile framework designed for bioimage analysis within the OMERO platform.

These hackathons provide a valuable opportunity to engage in practical learning and exploration of microscopy and image analysis techniques. We encourage you to register for the sessions that interest you and join us in advancing the field of microscopy.

To register or for further details, please visit [Registration Link] or reach out to the respective organizing committee members directly.

We look forward to your participation!

Best regards,

NVvM DA/DM Workgroup

FEBS Advanced Course

A 6-days advanced microscopy course for experienced users focused at Functional Imaging

Every two years, the van LeeuwenHoek Centre for Advanced Microscopy (LCAM) organises a FEBS advanced practical course on fluorescence microscopy for PhD students, postdoc and other interested scientists. This year the topic of the course will be focused on visualising cellular dynamics:

ELMI 2024

The European Light Microscopy Initiative was created in 2001 to establish a unique communication network between European scientists working in the field of light microscopy and the manufacturers of their equipment. Its aim is to promote the quickly developing field of light microscopy as a fundamental research tool for the life sciences and to strengthen the channels of communication between researchers, core facilities and industry.

The annual meeting, which has been running for two decades at various venues across Europe, has an excellent reputation within the microscopy community, making this meeting a key event in the calendar of hundreds of scientists and developers. The strength of this meeting lies in the mixture of scientific lectures on state-of-the-art, high-end microscopy combined with “hands-on” workshops and exhibition of the latest technology, organized by the leading companies in the field.

elmi2024 will be taking place in Liverpool from 4 -7 June 2024.

3-8 June: CryoEM school in Leiden & Delft

Dear community,

We are happy to announce the second iteration of the Dutch cryoEM school scheduled to take place from 03 – 08 June 2024 in Leiden and Delft.

The aim of this school is to teach the basic principles and practical aspects of electron microscopy and image processing to structural and molecular biologists wishing to determine macromolecular structures by cryoEM. The course will cover all aspects of cryoEM structure determination, ranging from sample preparation over data collection to processing and interpretation of high-resolution volume data, for both single particle images and tomograms, and will be aimed at PhD students and postdocs using cryoEM for structural analysis. The applicants should ideally have some basic knowledge of the cryoEM workflow to profit most from the course.

Invited speakers and tutors are:

Sjors Scheres (MRC-LMB)
Wim Hagen (Thermo Fisher Scientific)
Emanuel Katzmann (JEOL)
Friedrich Förster (Utrecht)
Stuart Howes (Utrecht)
Tom Burnley (CCP-EM)
Bogdan Toader (MRC-LMB)
Colin Palmer (STFC-UKRI)
Agnel Joseph (CCP-EM)
Matt Idanza (STFC-UKRI)

The school will be limited to 20 participants. The deadline for application is 22 March 2024 and we will inform selected participants approximately 1-2 weeks after the deadline.

Thanks to generous sponsoring, registration is free of charge for participants from academia. Transportation to and from the venues, and accommodation, are not included in the school and need to be arranged by the selected participants themselves.

A detailed program and instructions for registration can be found here: https://edu.nl/mpbvh
